Rip Me Off Will You

I get offers in the mail all the time for terrible merchandise offered at exorbitantly high prices, or secured credit card offers with $70 in annual fees.  But this one I got the other day really takes the cake.

They send you this credit voucher that looks like a check for $400.

And you can use this to pay for the first $400 of various products they offer, such as one of these two computers.

I don’t know what the “National Reference Retail” is but $700 for a Pentium 400 Desktop w/ Windows 95 seems a tad bit overpriced to me.  The thing that gets me is that enough people must fall for this ruse to make it worth it for them to send out these thick full color brochures.

If nothing else it provided my Dad and I with a good laugh.  Maybe that’s the point, to share a bit of humor with the average consumer of this dark and gloomy world. … I’m not convinced.

  1. Reminds me of this story, always fun reading. There’s a small “Part II” link under the article, easy to miss ;-)

  2. Oops, I guess you can’t post external links in comments. Oh well, do a Google search for “Junk check cashed” and you’ll find it.
